Cultural Style - Haida Carver: Mungo Martin with Henry Hunt and David Martin

Artist's Comments:

This pole is located in Victoria B.C. Canada at Thunderbird Park. It was carved in 1955 and is a copy of an old pole that once stood in the now abandoned village of Tamu in the Queen Charlotte Islands. (Haida Gwaii) A mortuary pole had a large cavity carved into the upper end of an inverted pole (to allow for more space). After 1 year spent in a mortuary house the remains were placed in the cavity of the mortuary pole. A painted frontal board was placed to cover the open cavity at the front.
