Muses from the artistic world of Sonia Mocnik

Where did October go?

I don't think I have ever been so busy!  I have been painting, but not the larger pieces or commissions that I have on my list.

I've been working on developing some teaching material for a possible class in the new year.  I thought I had everything ready - and I can't believe how much information I have neglected to keep updated!

I realize my info is mostly uptodate on my website, but my CV is missing some of that informaiton.  I also thought I had all my photos of my art in one place.  Well there is nothing like being disorganized!  These are just some of the business aspects of the artist's life.

The better part of art is being in the moment and seeing something that you really want to paint.  There are some wonderful opportunities here locally now that I am once again in Mexico.  I do have so much material from my wonderful Mediterrean trip.   I picked up a couple of art books from the Lake Chapala Society library.  The libarian asked me if I knew I had taken the books out before.  I did remember, but with any reference material, a chance to look at it from fresh eyes can be very useful!

I was reading about saturated and unsaturated color.  If you fill your painting with bright saturated color the viewer's eye can get lost and not find the focus of the painting.  But if you use the saturated color for the focal point and then more unsaturated and "local" color for the rest of the painting, it will draw the eye to the focus of attention.  I think I have tried to do this in my paintings, but may have found my love of color overrides the rules.  However, I did also note in the same reading that it's better to go with your instinct and just remember about the rules.

So, after getting a chance to get these thoughts on paper, I will go back less frustrated to all the loose ends of my "business" end of art that I need to do.  Happy Painting!
