Description:Made from old growth Western Red Cedar this piece is carved to resemble a headdress a chief might wear. It has hand pounded copper eyes, teeth and tougue as well as black bear fur. Painted with acrylics, this mask is sealed with an oil and wax finish.
Artist's Comments: The Bear represents strength and the possesion of many human qualities. The bear is referred to as "Elder Kinsmen" and is of high ranking in Northwest Coast mythology. The amount of copper is plentiful because I wanted to show respect to the relationship between man and bear, sharing the same high regard for copper and its wealth as currency and stature.
