Shows and Events

We are currently working on new venues to have our work exhibited.

History

The Vancouver Sketch Club was formed in 1952 by the then curator of the Vancouver Art Gallery. It was originally designed to give downtown businessmen an opportunity to sketch and socialize. The name was legally changed in 1992 when women were welcomed as members and it is now open to any individual with an interest in drawing and painting. All skill levels are welcome.

The Vancouver sketch club meets monthly from September through to May. The meetings may be an artist demonstration, a live model for sketching, shows or discussions of members work. In July and August we have weekly painting and sketching excursions to locations around the Lower Mainland. At least once a year, we have a group showing of members paintings. In the last two years we have shown at the following locations:

i. The Unitarian Church

ii. Cambie Village Massage Clinic (CVMT)

iii. The West End Community Center

iv. The Deer Lake Gallery in Burnaby, B.C.

We utilize our website to promote our members work, provide a description of the artists that are our members and share the upcoming events and activities of the group. We have a facebook page that provides up to date event activity, regularly engages with our facebook audience showing the type of work the group is producing, sharing artist information online and providing a networking for other artist who may be interested in participating. We also send out a regular newsletter to members and other artists who wish to be kept apprised of upcoming local events.

Members

PIROJ AMROLIA Piroj likes to use oil, pastel and watercolour but recently most of her work is in watercolour. Water colour though frustrating, she finds excitement in the unexpected results which keeps her hooked to this medium. She likes to paint large paintings with generous and vibrant colours. She draws her inspiration from her birth place “AFRICA”.

TAYLORE CO has taken courses in fashion illustration, watercolour and oil, culminating in a year of courses at the Vancouver Academy of Art. She has shown her work with "Artists in Our Midst", at various cafes and bookstores, and other venues. She has been exhibiting with the Vancouver Sketch Club for over ten years.

JUDITH FAIRWOOD has a BFA degree in visual art from Emily Carr Institute of Art and Design. She has also taken a variety of art related non-credit courses and workshops, and has had work accepted for several juried shows. She has a special interest in exploring the borders where realism and abstraction, reality and fantasy meet and overlap.

CLAUDETTE FLEMING has taken private art classes in Canada and the United States, studied in San Miguel de Allende, Mexico, and completed first year and part of second year at Emily Carr Institute of Art and Design. She has a special interest in drawing and painting portraits and the human figure.

BELUVIA FREIGANG was born and grew up in Uruguay, South America. Descendent of an Austrian artistic family, her mother was a painter and poet, Biluvia started to paint beside her mother at an early age.Later, she studied with a French painter, Leonardo Laens, who taught her to paint in several mediums. After family, work and several years of set backs, she came back to painting and once again picked up her brushes. She took several courses to refresh her skills, including workshops in Toronto where she formerly lived. When she moved to Vancouver, she pursued further painting courses and embraced her brushes once again. She experiments in various mediums and is presently predominantly working in acrylics and watercolors. She has taken various art courses to help in her pursuit of her passion. She enjoys painting and sketching outdoors. She joined the Vancouver Sketch Club over a year ago.

ELSA HUBATKA LANGE graduated from Langara Collage Fine Arts Program in 1998. She has also attended Emily Carr Institue of Art and Design and the Vancouver Academy of Art.

SONIA MOCNIK  works with watercolour, pen and ink and acrylics. She enjoys plein air painting, regularly taking part in the Harmony Arts Plein Air in Vancouver, the Grand Prix of Plein Air in Richmond and the Gibsons Paint Out on the Sunshine Coast.  She teaches watercolour classes Regularly at the West Vancouver Community center with a class currently on Thursdays from 9 to 12. You can join in anytime and classes run until March 15.

KATHRYN NEWELL loves watercolor and has taught watercolor classes in Kelowna.  She is also a member of the Federation of Canadian Artists.

JOY PEIRSON formerly worked in Dubai.  Since finding that she loves painting, she has focused on this and even has shown back in Dubai.  She will be getting a new studio space down in the eastside.

ZENOBIA TURNBULL My artistic skills have been self-taught, augmented by workshops, at Langara College, Confederation and Shadbolt Centres in Burnaby. I currently paint in the studios of Jacquie Manning and also take classes from Gabriela DiaConnu. As a child, I was told “Don’t sit around twiddling your thumbs. Do something.” Once I was given a small notebook and pencil. “Write, draw do something with it!”I did and I have not stopped. Scribbling, doodling, painting and sketching. Waiting around for life’s appointments is no longer tedious. Someone is late? Never mind, out comes my sketch book. Carry a camera on a trip? Perhaps but more frequently I sketch. Forgot a birthday? Make a sketch. Sketching and painting is a liberating addiction.

EVA WIDEMAN holds a BA Fine Arts degree with an art major from Goshen College, Indiana. Since then, she has also taken numerous art courses and workshops, most recently on old masters' techniques at the Vancouver Academy of Art. She has completed several commissioned paintings. An active member of the Vancouver Sketch Club and currently president, she has exhibited in the group's annual shows for over fourteen years.
